Helios Protocol Pilot: Blockchain Trade Documentation Results
First operational results from blockchain-anchored certificate of origin verification
The Helios Protocol, EEIT's blockchain-anchored audit trail infrastructure, completed its first operational pilot across the Tallinn-Warsaw trade corridor in January 2026. The pilot processed 1,247 certificate of origin transactions, 892 compliance attestations, and 456 customs declarations through the blockchain verification layer.
Key performance metrics exceeded projections: document verification time decreased from an average of 4.2 business days to 1.4 business days (67% reduction), zero integrity failures were recorded across all anchored transactions, and customs processing time at the Polish-Lithuanian border decreased by 41% for pilot participants.
The pilot also revealed areas requiring further development: integration with legacy customs IT systems remains complex, particularly in jurisdictions using pre-2020 customs management platforms; the cost per transaction needs to decrease by approximately 30% to achieve economic viability at scale; and regulatory acceptance of blockchain-anchored documents varies significantly across Three Seas jurisdictions.
